What Can and Can’t Braces Fix?

Braces are one of the greatest advances in modern medicine. Though a good amount of people might think of them as purely cosmetic, the truth is that braces can help with real medical issues. But, unfortunately, there are some things that braces simply can’t help with. Here’s a rundown of what braces can fix, and what they can’t.

Can Fix

Let’s start with the obvious. Braces are meant to correct crooked or gapped teeth, but that’s not all they can help with. If you have an overbite or underbite, braces may be able to help. Bite problems can affect the way a person eats and talks, and can cause headaches and other health issues. Braces can help fix these problems by aligning your teeth and bite, and help correct a misalignment of the jaw.

Can’t Fix

The main thing braces can fix is poor dental hygiene practices. Problems like enamel erosion and periodontitis will only get worse with braces if not handled correctly. Working on your brushing technique, flossing, and finding the right toothbrush and toothpaste combo will help, but the best thing you can do is brush your teeth at least twice a day. The best practice is to brush in the morning, before bed, and after every meal. This is especially helpful for people with braces since small bits of food can get stick in the different pieces.
